CARY, N.C. - The Women's Eagles Sevens continued their ruthless streak on both sides of the ball at the 2015 NACRA Sevens Championships with a 74-0 defeat of Barbados Saturday.
Lauren Doyle scored her fourth and fifth tries of the day in the win as one of four Eagles to dot down in-goal twice in the second match of Pool A play. The U.S. will face Cayman Islands in their final match of the day at 4:28 p.m. ET at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Kate Zackary was the only player to touch the ball - other than Barbados' restart-kicker - until Alev Kelter's first conversion in the first few seconds of the match. The former soccer player caught the opening kickoff in the middle of the pitch and beat the defenders to the wing and the try zone for an early, 7-0, lead.
Zackary was close to giving the Eagles possession on Kelter's restart due to Barbados failing to collect the ball, but her hands failed her, forcing a knock. A penalty was called against Barbados following the scrum, and Joanne Fa'avesi set up Kelly Griffin for the second try of the match.
Kristen Thomas scored her first try of the match less than a minute later to extend the lead to 21-0, while Doyle displayed the skill and pace that earned a Canada Women's Sevens Dream Team selection earlier in the season for her fourth try of the tournament. Thomas' second try in three minutes gave the U.S. a 33-0 halftime lead.
Similar to their 45-0 defeat of Jamaica in the first match of pool play, the Eagles made a few substitutions at halftime. Unlike that first match, the U.S. continued to score at an unbeatable rate.
Kelter scored from her own kickoff after Barbados lost the ball forward, then Doyle pushed the lead to 45-0 with a step on the outside about 10 meters from the try line.
Melissa Fowler had her eyes on the try line in the 11th minute as she got to the outside of a defender on the wing at the 22, but could not escape the grasp of her opposite number. Hannah Lopez was there in support, however, and Fowler made the perfect offload to set up the five-pointer.
Dana Meschisi scored her first of two tries from a neat pass from Griffin in the 12th minute, and Fowler and Farmer scored less than a minute apart for a 69-0 score. Meschisi added the final layer of icing to the cake with a dot-down in-goal for the 74-0 win.
The Eagles hold a plus-119 point differential with two wins from two matches to lead Pool A, while Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago each have two wins to their name in Pool B. At the end of pool play, the eight women's teams will be seeded for day two.
