Mass Participation Manager, Sharon Moskowitz noted on directive of the first-ever program, “The new Rookie Rugby League Grant Program serves to grow youth participation in our communities by eliminating the barrier of equipment costs to set up and run a full league.”

Rookie Rugby is the introductory game for rugby and official start of the player pathway for USA Rugby. The program is used in PE classrooms, after-school programs, community programs and rugby clubs throughout the United States. Kids, parents, teachers, fans, referees and coaches learn and compete in a simplified version of rugby played with flag belts.

Through the grant package, each league is supplied with the following Rookie Rugby materials;

  • 10 Rugby Balls (size choice between 3 or 4)
  • 1 Ball Bag
  • 40 Bibs (4 colors)
  • 40 Flag Belts (4 colors)
  • 20 Field Cones
  • 1 set of Rugby Game and Skill Cards
  • 1 Rookie Rugby Curriculum Manual
  • 3 - 6 week Coaching Program Manuals
  • 1 Rookie Rugby Admin Manual

"We've carefully thought of the equipment needed to run a full league from start to finish,” Moskowitz continued, “The materials included in the grant equipment package is everything an administrator, coach, and/or parent could need to feel informed and ready to bring rugby to dozens of youth participants in their community. We encourage future plans to sustain growth and are happy to work with each grant recipient to ensure success.'

Requirements for grant approval revolve around applicants submitting new Rookie Rugby League Application Page, coaches passing USA Rugby Level 100 certification and Rookie Rugby Instructor Certification. All requirements are available to complete online at any time.

Full information, instructions and grant application can be found via the grant page Rookie Rugby League Grants Page.
