The 3rd Annual Urban Rugby Championship proudly announces its move to the heart of the nation, Washington DC.
From March 5th to 9th, 2024, qualifying programs from across the country will gather in the name of equity, access and opportunity through rugby. The transformative power of the sport will be on full display throughout the week of empowering experiences, community building, top flight competition and celebration.
In its third edition, the Urban Rugby Championship (URC) is poised to continue on its groundbreaking trajectory and deliver on its promise to create a transformative experience for the players, programs, and community it gathers. The URC subsidizes travel, delivers resources and unites affiliate organizations to ensure student-athletes of color from under-resourced communities can access the best rugby has to offer. In 2022, Dallas Youth Rugby secured the URC Belt in Memphis, TN, while in 2023, an exceedingly rare weather phenomenon in Los Angeles, CA prevented the finals from taking place.
University Sojourn: Rugby athletes, mentors, and ambassadors will pay a visit to Howard University, engaging with students and imparting their enthusiasm for the sport. Motivational talks and workshops will be conducted to invigorate and inspire the upcoming generation of black and brown collegiate rugby players.
Engagement with Elementary & Junior High Schools: Participants will connect with local elementary and junior high school students in Washington DC, building community, inclusivity and excitement through rugby exhibitions and interactive sessions. This initiative aims to introduce rugby to young children with representative near-peers and increase awareness around our sport.
Exploring Key Washington DC Sites: Throughout the week, the Urban Rugby Championship will tour the city with their coaches, mentors and teammates, building new perspectives and connections while exploring the complicated and rich history of our nation's capital.
Full-Day 7's Tournament: The zenith of the championship will unfold on Saturday, March 9th, 2024, featuring a day-long, action-packed 7's tournament. Rugby teams from across the nation will compete for the 2024 URC title.
