Women’s Division II
Carolinas/Georgia
Fort Bragg hosted the Savannah Shamrocks Saturday in North Carolina, but Bragg’s field failed to give the home team any advantages. Eleven minutes into the matchup’s Savannah’s Allison Kurtz scored the game’s first try. After the conversion, Savannah took a 7 to 0 lead. At the 23-minute mark, Fort Bragg’s Hannah Spencer did respond with one (and only) try of their own, but the conversion failed. Following Savannah’s four more first half tries, the Shamrocks took a commanding 31 to 5 lead going into halftime. In the second half, Savannah scored ten unanswered tries, giving the Shamrocks a convincing 90 to 5 victory over Fort Bragg.
Florida
Further south in Jacksonville, Florida, the Fort Miami RFC clobbered the Jacksonville Sinners 60 to 0. Kristi Schneep led Fort Miami with three tries, scoring at the 4-minute, 67-minute, and 72-minute marks.
Finishing off Saturday’s action in the Sunshine State, the Tampa Bay Krewe avenged their loss to Orlando Griffins earlier in February, beating Orlando 40 to 19. The two teams were tied at halftime, with the Krewe taking ownership in the second half. Alyssa Mayer led the Krewe, with 2 tries, both in the second half. Joining Alyssa on the scoreboard, Paula Hoker and Amanda Scott earned tries in the first half, with Vicky Becerra and Ruth Black adding to Mayer’s tries after halftime with one a piece. The Orlando Griffins’ tries were scored by Shontavia House and Lindsey Perkins (first half) and Dasha Plotnikov (second half).
Men’s Division II
Carolinas/Georgia
The Southern Pines RFC pummeled the Charleston Outlaws 105 to 0. Southern Pines had already taken a 43 to 0 lead going into halftime. While there are too many tries from Saturday to name every player by name, Southern Pines’ top try scorers included Zach Miller (three), Jonathan White (two), and Emerson Bessell (two).
The Tobacco Road RFC came from behind to defeat the Greenville Griffins 22 to 19. Greenville held a 22 to 19 lead halftime with two tries by Justin Smith and another by Jason Callicutt, For Tobacco Road, Cobin Moseley and Matthew Markovetz each reached the try zone in the first half, and Wade Berreth and William Chevis scoring after halftime.
Wrapping up Saturday’s D-II coverage in the Carolinas/Georgia conference, the Atlanta Old White RFC caged Clemson University Tigers 52 to 9. John Shore led Atlanta with four tries John with the other four tries from Kyle Braid (two), Lucas Baistrocchi, and Benjamin Duncan.
Florida
The Tampa Bay Krewe defeated the visiting Orlando Griffins with an impressive 50 to 12 margin of victory. Thanks to tries by Krewe Donn Keels, Justin Branca, Sowani Asaeli Nabiaau, Jacob McFadden, and Jared Garcia, the Krewe had amassed a 36 to 7 advantage by halftime. Jeffrey Herron each scored converted try in the second half to give Tampa the 50 to 12 victory. The Krewe’s Captain Aaron Martin told USA Rugby: “I think the team win really came down to unselfish play and quick ball movement. Dominating scrums and line outs set the tone, and dynamic play from the backs poured the points on.”
Thanks to tries Miguel Pena and Oliver Hire, the Miami Tridents RFC beat the Boca Raton Buccaneers 21 to 14. Miami had already jumped out to 15-0 at halftime. Buccaneers’ converted tries by Michael Oliver and Tristen Gray gave Boca Raton the 14 points in the last half of play.
The Jacksonville RFC hosted the Miami RFC Saturday, but they were unable to capitalize on what would have been the home field advantage. Miami narrowly defeated Jacksonville 24 to 21. Miami’s first half tries were scored by William Moreno and Miguel Lindsay, with Borja Sepulvesa and John Bankston breaking through in the second half. William Lawson scored a try in the first half for Jacksonville, with tries by David Wandel and David Washington in the final 40 minutes of play.
Finishing off Saturday’s Division II weekend action across Florida, the Naples Hammerheads 79 hosted, and blanked the Okapi Wanderers 79 to 0. Naples top try scorers were led by Jocelyn Edouard, Jadon Subadan and Quintus de Bruyn (two tries each).
True South
In Memphis on Saturday, the Chattanooga RFC mauled the Memphis Blues 53 to 0. With tries from Patrick Flynn, Lyall Harrison, John Truex, and Israe Bowen, Chattanooga had already taken a 39 to 0 lead over Memphis at the end of the first half. Lyall Harrison’s second try and Benjamin Lowry scored after halftime to give Chattanooga 14 more points before the end of the game,
Further south in the True South Conference Saturday, the New Orleans RFC hosted, and blasted the Birmingham Vulcans 79 to 0. New Orleans had already taken a 39 to 0 advantage before halftime, with Birmingham unable to reach the try zone for all 80 minutes.
Men’s Division III
Carolinas
Saturday’s Division III action starts off in the Carolinas, where the Columbia Old Grey RFC defeated the Triad RFC 23 to 10. The two teams were tied with 10 a piece at halftime, but the Triad could not stop Columbia from adding 13 more points before the game ended.
The Asheville Iguanas remain perfect in Carolina’s D-III division, with a 50 to 7 win over the50 Camp Lejeune Misfits 7. Asheville had a 29 to 0 lead at halftime, and Camp Lejeune only tacked one try prior to the end of the game.
Florida
Three D-III games took place Saturday across the Sunshine State.
Even though the Brevard Old Red Eye RFC led the Palm Beach Panthers 19 to 14 at halftime, Palm Beach rallied in the second half to defeat Brevard 38 to 19.
While the Daytona Beach Coconuts and the 31 Tampa Bay Krewe kept it close in the first half, with Daytona Beach holding onto a 7 to 5 lead, the Coconuts dominated the Krewe in the second half, beating Tampa Bay 31 to 12.
Finishing off Florida, the Gainesville Hogs slayed the Sarasota Surge 24 to 10. Rob Mabry and Joshua Melancon each scored a try to give the Surge its 10 points.
True South
Clarksville TN’s Headhunters RFC held off a rally by the Gadsden Pioneers to win the contest 17 to 11. At the half, the Headhunters had led the Pioneers 12 to 0. Judas Salazar, Shane Jordan, and Rashaud Hugley each scored one try for the Headhunters, with Gadsden Mark MgGlathery getting a try for Gadsden.
While the Panama City Beach’s Hurricanes only trailed Mobile’s Battleship RFC 7 to 0 at halftime, Mobile put the pedal to the metal in the second half and beat Panama City 31 to 0. Michael Lester, David Hernandez, Mason Dees, and David Fillingim all scored tries to give the Battleship RFC the win.
