LAFAYETTE, Colo. - The USA Rugby Training & Education Department is hosting a technical speed clinic in Illinois during "The Rugby Weekend Presented by AIG,' featuring NFL Combine Speed Specialist and USA Rugby Speed Coach Les Spellman.
Two-and-a-half-hour sessions will be held at Matteson Community Center in Matteson, Ill., Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, for coaches, referees, and athletes of all ages participating in any sport - not just rugby. Like passing and kicking in rugby or shooting and jumping in basketball, speed is a skill that can be strengthened with training.
More information
Spellman studied film and ran track as a walk-on at Temple University, where he found his passion for teaching the mechanics of acceleration, speed, and periodization. Since then, he's worked with members of the Men's and Women's Eagles and Eagles Sevens teams, including 2016 Olympian Carlin Isles, and coaches at USA Rugby Academy powered by ATAVUS camps.
"We are thrilled to have Les on board for the speed clinics in Chicago this year,' USA Rugby Training & Education Manager Kelley Sullivan said. "Not only will his sessions be fun professional development opportunities for coaches, but they will be exciting and hands-on for the athletes participating.
"Since speed is a skill utilized in many sports, this clinic is open to athletes from all sports. We are hoping to get a varied, diverse group of athletes to attend.'
Coaches in attendance will receive five (5) Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for attending, with the cost of registration just $50. For more information, email education@usa.rugby.
